Band-Aids??

My oldest will be five next week.

When five rolls around, so does a whole new world.

A world where Mommy will soon have to get up early every day to get a little one ready for school.

The days of doing whatever, something or nothing, will be gone.

And I'm trying to decide what makes me more sad.

That she'll be out of my care five days a week...

Or that I will soon have to get up early every day to get a little one ready for school??

Sigh.

Yesterday, I made the appointment for her to have the immunizations she needs to go to school...and it bummed me out. I do not like taking my kids to be hurt. It just seems wrong. I'm not saying that I disagree with vaccines, I don't want to start that debate. I'm just saying that I hate that I have to let someone hurt my 'almost not a baby anymore'.

I asked hubs if he'd go with us. He's the one who's good at calming her down...if need be. I want to find someone to watch little brother while we take Miss Ella for her 'rite of passage' (volunteers?). He will find out soon enough what this is all about without having to watch her go through it.

I also want to plan something special for her that day. I'm thinking about lunch and Build-A-Bear. She's been to a birthday party there, but we've never taken her there on her own. She asked for a 'date' with just mommy and daddy not too long ago...maybe this will help her forgive us for the shots.

Do you do this sort of thing? Try to 'make it all better' by going somewhere special or buying a little treat?

Those are my kind of band-aids.

***Before it comes up, I realize that if I were homeschooling, my freedoms would be greater and I could choose to not get up early and get a little one ready for school every day...BUT...it is my opinion that homeschooling requires a calling. I can't say that I'll never have this calling, but I do not have this calling right now. I've said before, God is providing for us to choose private school and we have a glorious peace about taking advantage of God's provision until He decides otherwise***

After we did shots we always got an ice cream cone! Even if if was at 9:00 in the morning :)

Oh and I hear ya on the homeschooling. It is a calling I don't have!! Props to those who do -- it just ain't me :)

Your little disclaimer about homeschooling made me smile.
It isn't for everyone, that's for sure! Sometimes, I wonder if it's really for me.
One thing we do when we have our yearly check-ups, when the nurse has to prick a finger, I have the kids pick out their bravest finger. That seems to help.
Absolutely take that girl out on a date! It will help overshadow the yucky stuff.
If you want to email me and tell me when her appointment is, I'll see if I'm available for 'little brother duty.'

I know how you feel. The worse part is that they have to do that booster in six months so they totally know what's going on that time! I love your idea of build a bear. That would totally do it for me!

what a great day it will be for her and a chance to warn little brother that when you go to school you HAVE to get shots but you also get a fun day with M&D. I think it will work out great.

I remember when Brandon was 5 and starting school - it was definitely bittersweet - he's my only child and that was it, and I knew it. If she loves it, which she probably will, it will certainly make it easier on you. The getting up early is never easier :)

I always take Gracie for a treat after the doctor or anything that may be unpleasant for Gracie. Usually she gets a pop ("Spite") or a book, but for this occasion a date and Build a Bear seem like a great plan (bribery if you will). : )

Wow! I remember taking Sugar to get those shots....that was not fun for either of us. I took her out for Mc Donald's afterwards. I'll bet if you asked her about it today, that would be the part she remembers.

Build-A-Bear is a great idea! A day like that definitely deserves a special treat afterwards. :)

Oh...And I COMPLETELY agree with the home schooling thing being a calling. I admire the women who are able to do that for their children but I didn't get that call either. I didn't like school that much the first time around, I certainly don't want to go through it again. I'm just sayin! :)

I think that is a good idea, to take her to Build A Bear. I'm sure that will soothe her "owies" away!

I'm in the same boat as you, mine turns five in a month and I'm facing the same things - luckily not "head on" quite yet! ; )

Your disclaimer made me laugh. IT always seems like there is reason for debate: vaccines/no vaccines, public vs homeschool, SAHM vs WAHM. . .we are all in this together.

With that said we don't sugar coat it. Maybe we should. Both of us grew up in a "tough it up" household and we often bring our childhood with us (IN THIS REGARD!).

We do parent/child dates. With little ones in the house we have not done both parents and child, we do one parent and one child. It can even be a little thing like going to the park without a sibling.

It's a special time for everyone and it helps that child remember that they too are special.

I do take the kids to get a little treat---getting shots was my worse nightmare growing up---I was crazy everytime in the Dr. office...so when I see my children being so brave...I am soo impressed--LOL! I punched a Dr. once..no kidding.

And you are right...it is such an adjustment...getting up at 6:30 every morning and being away from them the majority of the time. It is so sad...but so good for them. I have seen my child grow in amazing ways.

I am with you 100% on the other subject....not for this momma either. LOL!
